Government Silent As Virgin Gorda Dump Fire Rages On
The dump site on Virgin Gorda has been ablaze for the past hours, and continues to rage on. Outside of a brief statement via WhatsApp from the Minister to indicate that the dump site is temporarily closed, there has been no official word from Government on what is now a frightening situation for residents and visitors on the 8 square mile island.
“Good morning all, please note that the dump site will be TEMPORARILY closed effective immediately, until further notice, pending an assessment and an investigation into an early morning fire. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. Please spread the word.” Honourable Vincent Wheatley, stated via a WhatsApp Group for Virgin Gorda Residents.
Homeowners are complaining of ash on their homes, and high end properties in the area which are filled with guests are scrambling to ensure the safety of said guests.
We understand that this is the worst the fire has been to date and while there are two fire trucks on the island, there is no water available to handle the situation.
Honourable Vincent Wheatley who is the District Representative for the island, is also the Minister responsible for Solid Waste. Some residents are mobilizing themselves for a 2:45 meeting to determine ways forward on forcing a fix from Government.
The dump sites in the Territory continue to be hazardous to residents, including health threats with there seeming to be no resolution in sight.
We will continue to bring you information on the matter.
