Former Educator, cultural & historical Icon Jennie Wheatley passed away Thursday night 5 October. She was 84.
Jennie Wheatley was a long-standing member of the Virgin Island’s intellectual community, and has worked to preserve and share the islands' history and culture for numerous years. She was also an Educator, primary and secondary school, and later moving on to the HLS Community College. She also served on the college's Board of Governors from its founding in 1990 and helped establish its Virgin Island Studies Program in 1999.
Wheatley was named a member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1993 for her work in education, and In 2011, she was once again honored by then-Governor Boyd McCleary for her contributions to education.
Jennie Wheatley as Author, published four children's books in 2005 and 2006: Danielle’s Trunk, Ariana likes to Read, Who Is the Best in the Garden?, and Timmy Turtle Runs Away, all of which take place in the British Virgin Islands.
In 2009, she released her first poetry collection, Along the Road, and In 2013 published Struggles and Triumphs, a history of the British Virgin Islands.
She has sat on many committees working to preserve and identify Virgin Islands history and culture.
In 2022, she released a final book ‘Pass It On’ - A Treasury of Virgin Islands Folk Remedies.
We extend condolences to her husband, children, and family circle, and also to the wider Virgin Islands. We thank her for her unwavering service and contributions to the Territory.
