RVIPF URGES MOTORISTS AND PASSENGERS TO BUCKLE UP FOR SAFETY

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) is reminding all drivers and front-seat passengers to wear their seat belts at all times while the vehicle is in motion.

The Road Traffic (Seatbelt & Cellular) Regulations 2004 requires that both drivers and passengers wear seat belts to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of an accident. Drivers found in violation of this law are liable to a fine of $100 for driving without a seat belt, and if a front-seat passenger is unbelted, the driver will be fined an additional $100, and the passenger will be fined $100.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Jacqueline Vanterpool states, “We have noticed an increasing number of motorists and front-seat passengers failing to buckle up, which puts lives at unnecessary risk. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that all passengersin the front seat wear their seat belts, as safety should always come first.”

The Ag. Commissioner further stressed the importance of setting a positive example. “Adults who neglect to wear seat belts send the wrong message to younger passengers. If we want to build a culture of road safety, it starts with something as simple as buckling up.”

The RVIPF urges all motorists to make seat belt use a habit before starting their journey, no matter how short the trip. “Accidents can happen at any time, even just a few yards from your home. Seat belts save lives, please buckle up,” Ag. Commissioner Vanterpool added.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force remains committed to enforcing traffic safety laws and educating the public on responsible road use.
