Chief Librarian, Ms. Suzanne Greenaway has said that libraries and literacy is an integral part of community building as the Territory observes Library Week 2025.

The week will be observed from from April 21 to 25 under the theme, “Linking You to a World of Information: Your Library, Anytime, Anywhere” and is scheduled to coincide with World Book and Copyright Day, observed on April 23.

The Chief Librarian said that this year’s theme reflects the unique role the Public Library plays in connecting people to digital resources regardless of their location.

Ms. Greenaway stated, "Today’s library patrons are technologically savvy, and they have increased expectations about the amount, and type of available information they need, and moreover, the library’s ability to provide that information. By using the Library’s Libby app, persons can easily access and explore information from inside the Library, or from, far corners of the Territory, at their own pace and in their own time.”

The week’s activities are aimed towards the general community, and the objectives are to promote the digital platforms, promote local books through a display and readings from local authors on the radio stations, promote literacy by encouraging reading of eBooks, printed books and listening to audiobooks, and highlighting the services which the Library provides to the community.

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro will declare the week open on Monday, April 21. The week will feature presentations on the digital platforms to students, a display of local books, and readings by local authors. The public is encouraged to support the week’s activities by participating in the events.

Library Week was implemented in order to create awareness of the value of a public library and foster the love for reading. The department has library branches in Virgin Gorda, East End, Tortola and Anegada.
