In an inspiring event this past Friday, the Grade 5 students of Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in the Virgin Islands took their learning experience to an extraordinary level. Nineteen young scholars, under the guidance of their teacher, Candia McFarlane, participated in a Special Sitting of the House of Assembly, showcasing not only their understanding of governance but also their vision for the future of their territory.
The students, each acting as the newly elected Premier of the Virgin Islands, proposed thoughtful constitutional changes during this mock legislative session. Their proposals covered a broad range of topics, indicating which branch of government would be responsible and the budgets required for implementation, demonstrating an impressive grasp of public administration and fiscal planning.
This unique educational initiative began when the Honourable Corine George-Massicote, Speaker of the House, was invited to the school to listen to the students' presentations. Recognizing the potential for a more impactful learning experience, she facilitated their presentation in the actual legislative chamber, providing a realistic backdrop for their proposals.
The session mirrored a real sitting of the House of Assembly, complete with the Speaker presiding and the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and Sargeant-at-Arms playing their roles. This attention to detail added depth to the students' experience, immersing them in the processes and protocols of governance.
Distinguished guests, including the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro; Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton; Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Honourable Luce D. Hodge-Smith; and Member for the Third District, Honourable Julian Fraser, were present to witness and support the students' efforts.
The participation of the students on International Women's Day did not go unnoticed, with Minister de Castro particularly praising the involvement of young females in the session. The encouragement and commendations from the attending dignitaries underscored the importance of such initiatives in fostering civic awareness and engagement among the youth.
Teacher Candia McFarlane's gratitude for the opportunity highlighted the event's significance in providing practical learning experiences that contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals. The mock sitting not only enriched the students' understanding of governance but also honed their critical thinking and public speaking skills.
The Ebenezer Thomas Primary School's Mock Sitting represents a landmark in the House of Assembly's efforts to connect with the community and prepare students for active and informed citizenship. It serves as a testament to the potential within each student to contribute meaningfully to the Virgin Islands' future, laying the groundwork for the next generation of leaders.
