In an electrifying conclusion to the Ministry of Education’s annual Inter-Secondary School Debates, Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) has emerged as the victorious champion, clinching the title against St. George’s Secondary School. The final round, held on Monday, 18 March 2024, at 1:56pm, was not just a display of academic prowess but a testament to the determination and hard work of students and educators alike.
The winning team, comprised of Naomi Onwufuju, Adrianne Thomas, and Kande Richardson, took on the challenging topic, "All students exiting secondary school in the Virgin Islands should attain a technical qualification." Their preparation, which included late-night sessions and rigorous practice, paid off as they demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication, leading to their triumph.
Naomi Onwufuju, who has been a standout participant throughout the tournament, won the overall best speaker award, further cementing her place as a debate powerhouse. Reflecting on the victory, Onwufuju shared her ambition to conclude her high school journey on a high note. Adrianne Thomas recounted the team’s journey from a second-place finish in the previous year to their current championship status, highlighting the significant growth and improvements made. Kande Richardson emphasized the victory's role in boosting the school's reputation and morale, illustrating the impact of their win beyond the debate arena.
The championship also featured an impromptu speech segment, showcasing the eloquence and quick thinking of participants. Naomi Onwufuju continued to shine by securing the top position for ESHS, with Mr. Israel George of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre and Mr. Rajon Gibbs of the Claudia Creque Education Centre following in second and third places, respectively.
Adding to the accolades, ESHS has been honored with the opportunity to represent the Virgin Islands in the upcoming National Tourism Debate, an announcement made by the BVI Tourist Board that underscores the significance of their achievement.
