In a press release issued to the media, Romaine Baird, 34, of Pasea Estate, has been charged with Theft, Obtaining Property by Deception, and Possession of Proceeds of Criminal Conduct. 

The allegations stem from an investigation that lasted several months in 2023. It is alleged that Mr. Baird unlawfully acquired and utilized someone’s card for unauthorized transactions totaling over $19,000 locally and internationally.

On Thursday 21 March, Guavaberry Media received information of the possible arrest of Mr. Baird from the public. GBM in turn attempted to follow the matter, but lips were tight. On Saturday morning 23 March, members of the public again inquired on the matter, further inquiring why the case was ‘hush hush’ and the individual in question appearing to be ‘protected’. 

Guavaberry Media sought to once again get to the bottom of the matter, and went a bit further up the command change to get the relevant information, and information finally released to the media and public. 

Guavaberry Media cannot confirm at this time whether efforts were indeed in play to withhold the information, or if it was an oversight. 

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins states, "We take allegations of financial misconduct seriously and are committed to thoroughly investigating such matters. Our dedicated officers have worked diligently over several months to uncover the truth in this case. We will continue to collaborate with local and international authorities to ensure justice is served and uphold the integrity of our financial systems."

Mr. Baird, who is the son of the late Apostle Ava Baird, was granted bail in the Sum of $40,000 to appear at the Magistrate’s Court on April 25 2024. 

In the CFATF financial report issued on the Territory in late 2023, it was highlighted that the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is less concerned with financial crimes and more focused on the drug trade.
