BOATERS AND SEAFARERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SAFEGUARD DINGHIES
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is urgently alerting the public about a significant surge in dinghy thefts throughout the Territory. These incidents, occurring most frequently between 7 and 10 p.m., seriously threaten our boating community. To combat this alarming trend, the RVIPF strongly advises all boat owners and charter companies to bolster the security measures for their dinghies.
To assist in preventing dinghy theft, the RVIPF recommends the following proactive steps for dinghy owners:
1. Mark your dinghy with a unique and inconspicuous identification mark to make it easily identifiable.
2. Always remove the key from the ignition of the dinghy when it is not in use.
3. Consider installing tracking devices on your dinghy to aid in its recovery in case of theft.
4. Document any unique markings or characteristics of the dinghy by taking detailed photographs.
5. Capture photographs of the entire dinghy from various angles, including its engine(s).
6. Promptly report any missing dinghies and provide relevant information to the RVIPF.
7. Keep a record of your dinghy's Hull Identification Number (HIN) in a secure and accessible location.
Furthermore, if you have information about the suspicious possession of any dinghy or vessel, the RVIPF encourages you to make an anonymous report through the confidential crime stoppers hotline at 1-800-8477 or call the RVIPF Access number 311.
Alternatively, you can contact the Marine Unit at 368-9349.
The RVIPF appreciates your cooperation and continued vigilance in helping to ensure the safety and security of our boating community.
