RVIPF ISSUES SAFETY ADVISORY AMIDST INCREASE IN THEFT OF VEHICLES
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force wishes to inform the public about the continued situation relating to the theft of motor vehicles on Tortola.
For two months, between May 11, 2024, and July 11, 2024, the RVIPF received and investigated eight reports regarding vehicles being taken without theconsent of the owners. Seven of those vehicles were registered as rental cars while the remaining one was registered for private use. In all cases, the keys were left in the vehicles either by the owner or by customers. Five of the vehicles were used during the commission of other crimes, after being taken without the owners’ consent.
As a result of coordinated investigations, intelligence-led patrols, and searches, all eight vehicles were recovered, and several persons have been arrested and charged for various crimes.
The RVIPF wishes to renew its advice to the public to take the following precautions to help prevent vehicle theft:
1. Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked whenever your vehicle is unattended, both day and night, significantly reducing the risk of theft.
2. If you are leaving your vehicle for someone else to collect, ensure they have a spare key or accompany you to retrieve it immediately. Do not leave keys inside the vehicle or in an easily accessible location.
3. Stay alert for individuals loitering or acting suspiciously in or around parking lots. Your vigilance can help deter criminal activity and protect your property.
If you notice any suspicious activity or have information that could assist the police, please contact the RVIPF via the 311-access number. Your cooperation and proactive measures are vital in maintaining the safety and security of our community.
