Death On Virgin Gorda Due To Closed/Unmanned Clinic

Aug 31, 2024 Breaking News

Our newsroom is overwhelmed with calls from irate and heartbroken community members of Virgin Gorda.  Reports are of a death in the Virgin Gorda community last night, Friday August 30th of one of their beloved residents.

Our newsroom is understanding that the gentleman went to the clinic last night for care, but the Doctor was not there, the Clinic was closed. The gentleman we are being informed, subsequently passed away.

Members of the community are outraged over the incident.

“What can we say, We all time talking about clinic staffing. Up to last week we spoke about this. And now we have an incident. A life could have possibly be saved. The CEO needs to come to Virgin Gorda and go her investigation from here rather than an office in Tortola.  We are always being asked to have patience but truly I don’t think our authorities really give a …. They don’t live here … they really don’t know our dilemmas.

Let’s see what happens this go around. I really hope this will not be 9 day news!!

Why was the doctor not in the clinic. Sick of it. We’ve been talking about this for years.

Even in the middle of the day they are not in the clinic but everybody fraid to say so!  Truthfully even the officials know but maybe we really need to see what they are contractually obligated for.” One resident noted.

“Good morning, the facility should always be open 24/7 with full operation, generator be fixed even if we have to buy a new one.” Another resident

“This should have never happened, I believe Virgin Gorda is generating enough funds for government to have a fully operational facility 24/7 and much more than that, like roads paved and painted along with proper side walks and beautifying everywhere. Where is the money going?” Another resident.

A memo from Dr. June Samuel, Acting (Interim) CEO of the HSA read:

“The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is aware of a recent incident involving an individual who sought care at our facility. We recognize the concerns this situation may raise within the community, and we want to assure everyone that we are taking this matter very seriously.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and all those affected. We are fully committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to understand the details of what occurred. The well-being of those who come to us for care is our highest priority, and we are focused on identifying any steps we can take to prevent similar incidents in the future.

We understand that this situation may lead to questions and concerns, and we are prepared to communicate openly and transparently as we learn more. We ask for your understanding and patience as we work diligently to address this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”

Earlier this week, the HSA announced the reopening of the Iris O’Neal clinic, but with revised hours.

Hours of Operation:

• Hours: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM

• Contact: (284) 440-1661

Home Care Services:

• Home care services continue to be provided to residents of the North Sound community.

After 7:00 PM - Emergencies Only:

• Emergency Contact Number: (284) 340-2045

However, one Citizen is pointing out that they faced a similar situation over a month ago.

“Same thing happened to me about 2 months ago at midnight.  Didn't even meet the security!  Walked around for about 20 minutes before a security finally showed up who then sought a nurse from the back.  I stood in the lobby bawling out Good Night! Good Night!  Pounding on the glass and nothing!  Sad situation all around!” another Virgin Gorda resident

“We talk about things in here for 7days or less, then forget about them until the next situation happens. Who is being held accountable? Families threaten to seek legal action, they are discouraged, and that also goes quiet as well. So how will these problems get fixed?” Concerned Virgin Gorda resident.

We are not certain whether a notice is posted on the door of the Clinic identifying operation times, and whether the emergency contact number is on the door.

There has been a constant cry from the community, for decades, for better health services, for  24/7 access to emergency health care. All it seems, to be falling on deaf ears.

Guavaberry Media extends condolences to the family and friends of the loved one.
