MUCH NEEDED CCTV UPGRADES ON SCHEDULE FOR YEAR END

Nov 13, 2024 0 Comments

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has announced significant advancement in public safety and security measures through the ongoing upgrade and expansion of CCTV cameras to street surveillance cameras across the island of Tortola. Following the successful completion of the initial CCTV installation in July 2023, this upgrade marks a pivotal step toward ensuring comprehensive coverage and heightened security across key areas.

Last year, a total of seventy (70) CCTV cameras were installed in thirty-two (32) strategic locations around Tortola. Recognizing the importance of expanding this network to meet growing security needs, the upgrade now includes the replacement of most existing cameras with advanced models and the addition of cameras in previously uncovered areas. The team anticipates that, by the end of 2024, over 100 cameras will be operational across Tortola, covering new streets and alleyways to provide more thorough surveillance.

Looking forward to 2025, additional funding has been requested to further extend coverage. With this future expansion, there is an opportunity to address remaining gaps and strengthen the security infrastructure across Tortola. Additionally, plans are underway to implement similar advancements on Virgin Gorda, where the number of CCTV locations will increase from 5 to 10, with over 20 cameras positioned to enhance security and coverage for residents.

These efforts underscore a strong commitment to the safety and well-being of residents on both Tortola and Virgin Gorda. An expanded and upgraded CCTV surveillance network will empower law enforcement agencies to monitor and respond to incidents more effectively, fostering a safer environment for all. The in-house project, led by Systems Manager Sergeant Claude Rymer and his dedicated team, has exemplified excellence in project execution without the need for external contractors.

Conducting the upgrades in-house has not only demonstrated the expertise of our personnel but has also resulted in substantial cost savings. An estimated $200,000 has been saved by avoiding outsourcing, while bi-monthly maintenance handled internally has reduced costs by over $40,000, equating to approximately $480,000 in annual savings.

This proactive approach allows for sustained functionality of the surveillance system while maintaining cost efficiency.

RVIPF extends heartfelt gratitude to Sergeant Rymer and his team in the RVIPF Communications Unit for their diligent efforts and exceptional work in delivering this critical project. Their dedication ensures that this initiative will contribute greatly to public safety and security throughout the British Virgin Islands.
