Premier Changes Position On Greedy Bill

May 04, 2023 0 Comments

Has the Premier changed his tongue on the ‘Greedy Bill’ now that the Election is over? Based on his statement during his first Press Conference post election, it may appear to be the case.

The Legislators’ Retirement Act has been a sore point for the Territory over the past couple years. However, it all came to a boiling point on the campaign trail when Honourable Myron Walwyn explained the controversial Bill during his speech at the NDP’s campaign launch event. The Premier Natalio Wheatley followed up Walwyn’s statement by releasing Cabinet information on Walwyn regarding his benefits under the Bill, which included the amount on the cheque he received.

While campaigning, the Premier pledged to repeal the Bill in it’s entirety, saying the Bill would be tabled at the 2nd Sitting of the 5th House of Assembly. However, at the press conference held on Monday May 1, he said he, along with his Cabinet, would review the parts that are of concern.

Honourable Walwyn in his first statement after being elected on April 24th, despite sitting on the Opposition, has said he will hold the Government to its commitment on fixing the Bill as a matter of priority.

During the campaign period, all Candidates committed to addressing the Bill should they be elected.

General Election was held in the Territory on Monday April 24th, and a new Cabinet sworn in on Tuesday April 25th 2023.
