Green VI, in collaboration with the BVI Farmers Network, is happy to welcome Charles Dowding, world-renowned agricultural educator, to the Virgin Islands for workshops on the “No Dig” farming method, how to do it and why it suits the Virgin Islands. There will be workshops on Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke from February first to the ninth. The workshops are open to all free of charge.. This exciting visit is part of Green VI’s ongoing mission to see food and yard waste used to enrich the soil of the Virgin Islands for a green, clean and healthy BVI.
Mr. Dowding’s “No Dig” farming and compost-making techniques have inspired millions through his Instagram and YouTube channels. His approach eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, instead focusing on building healthy, productive soil through natural methods. By avoiding soil disturbance and applying compost, Mr. Dowding’s techniques foster beneficial microorganisms, reduce weeding time and increase soil fertility—methods particularly suited to conditions in the Virgin Islands.
“Charles Dowding’s visit is an incredible opportunity for local farmers, educators, and community members to learn sustainable practices that reduce dependency on imports and enhance soil health,” says Natasha Harrigan, a Green VI Senior Project Manager. “This initiative embodies our commitment to creating opportunities for integrated solutions to waste, water and energy challenges.”
During his visit, Mr. Dowding will engage the BVI community through workshops, school visits and table talks. These sessions are designed to equip farmers, educators and families with practical, sustainable techniques for improving crop production and reducing environmental impact:
